The Salvationist - Chapter Thirty Five

“Jane! Where is my bouquet? I want to use it for the centerpiece!” exclaims April twisting as fast as she can in her form fitting wedding dress across the fellowship hall.

Just behind and trying to make every effort to catch up with April, Jane yells more loudly than she would like to “I’ve got it! It’s right here!” touching April on the arm while running up next to her.

“Oh thank you! I didn’t remember where I placed it . . . now on to my Elton. Where is my honey? Oh there he is talking to Ms. Bates. He’ll be there forever . . .” April quickly leaves Jane to stand on her own as she rushes to rescue Elton who actually seems to be enjoying the conversation with Ms. Bates.

“Have you recovered?” asks Grant putting his arm around Jane’s waist with a slight hug.

“Yes, I think so. I’m so glad that it is nearly over even though I liked being the maid of honor” sincerely sighs Jane “I think that I am now ready for a vacation though . . .”

“There will be plenty of time to relax on a beach in just a few weeks. I think our friends will be surprised but I understand not wanting to interupt April’s parade even though I think you deserve every attention that may come your way” states Grant kissing her on the cheek as he leads her to the bridal party table.

Emma tasting some of the pinwheels watching Jane and Grant from across the room, “How did I miss that? I’m with them all the time. I didn’t even know Jane liked him. How does that happen?”

Jennings also munching on some snacks with Emma “I don’t know about you, but I’ve known about them for a long time. It was so obvious. When either of them is in a room, they constantly keep their eyes on the whereabouts of the other. Sunday school class has been very entertaining for the last few weeks” then looking directly at her in a tone of astonishment “Where have you been Emma?”

“Really, I didn’t know anything about Grant being interested in Jane. I thought he liked Harriet” disbelievingly replies Emma.

“Harriet? What made you think of her? She likes Robert. She’s constantly talking about him. If anything, I thought Grant was flirting with you for awhile” surprised states Jennings “Out of all people, I’m surprised you weren’t the first one to notice. It’s been going on for months. According to Ms. Bates they were dating and quite serious. But something happened between them and she needed to take a break. I think it had something or other to do with his flirting which Jane didn’t like much. This is why Jane came to stay with Ms. Bates and her mother. But evidently Grant missed Jane and followed her here” twinkling with delight Jennings adds “There’s a reliable rumor that a special announcement might be made very soon!”

“I’m so happy for them. I’m still in shock that they are together, but really I think they will be very compatible and happy couple.” Emma genuinely feels pleased that her friends have found each other even if it is without her help or assistance.

“Emma, I’d like to say something to you if you don’t mind” and then adds not waiting for an reply “You need to quit worrying about everybody else’s love life and find someone of your own to settle down with. Love will find you, but you need to be ready to recognize it” advises Jennings “If you are too busy trying to chase cupid for everyone else, his aim might miss you”.

“I suppose you’re right” Emma agrees but seems somewhat disappointed in her tone as she notices Knightly pulling out Harriet’s chair at the banquet table before Harriet takes her assigned place “But I think cupid’s aim is going to have to hit someone else as well”.

Jennings chuckles “Don’t worry about it Emma. It will all work out at the right time. God has a way of making these things happen.”

“I suppose so” sighs Emma “I think that I need to find my place before the toasts begin. It’s good talking with you tonight”.

Robert takes his place next to Harriet and places a glass of punch in front of her. The place isn’t assigned to him but he switched the place cards before April could notice. He figures that April will get over it if she notices at all. He is taking the opportunity to seize a moment with Harriet that seems to be lacking lately.

“Harriet, do you mind if I sit next to you?” offers Robert while sitting down and not waiting for a response “How have you been doing lately?”

“Sure! I’ve been good. How are you doing? I’m so glad to see you. I was hoping that we would have a chance to talk tonight” blushes Harriet feeling more excited to talk and be near Robert than she expected “You sounded wonderful on the guitar. It was beautiful.”

“Thanks! I was hoping that you would like it. I’ve been practicing for awhile and added a little of my own style to the music” remarks Robert very pleased and complimented that Harriet notices his efforts.

“I always enjoy hearing you play. Some people can play well because they have taught themselves to, but you play from your heart which makes the music come to life and has a presence all of its own not just in the notes” honestly replies Harriet.

Robert isn’t sure how to respond to this compliment except to say “Thank you” even though the words do not seem enough.

“Have you written any more poetry lately?” asks Harriet remembering his get well card to her.

Robert’s eyes widen and he blushes. The truth is that he has written nearly a book of poetry just for her, but he isn’t about to tell her at this moment. He hears himself reply “some”.

“Well, I’d love for you to share ‘some’ of it with me when you have a chance. Do you ever write songs on your guitar? Do you write lyrics to them?” asks Harriet thinking that poetry and lyrics are often similar to each other.

As Robert takes a sip of his punch his cheeks deepen in their crimson hue. He wonders if Harriet can read his mind. “Yes . . . I write some music sometimes” knowing that he just wrote a song last week called “Ode to Harriet” which he will probably never tell her about when he was feeling a bit rejected because she wasn’t calling him anymore.

“You will definitely have to show me some of your songs. I’m sure they are wonderful! I’d like you to sing them to me if you wouldn’t mind. You have a great voice too and I can also hear how they are supposed to sound” instructs Harriet “Maybe you can come over to Alice Hammer’s house tomorrow and bring your guitar with you. Are you free in the afternoon, say around four? If you would like to, you can stay for dinner too.”

“That would be great!” Robert flushes at being invited to spend time with Harriet “I don’t have to work tomorrow so being there at four is no problem”.

“Well, if that’s the case, why don’t you come over earlier in the day. I don’t have to work tomorrow either” Harriet replies “Just let me know.”

“How does eleven sound then? There is a music festival that I think that you might like downtown” asks Robert slightly anxious but hopeful.

“Sounds good, but if you want to Alice picks up fresh kolaches for breakfast on Saturdays. I’m sure she wouldn’t mind adding a few extra from the bakery if you would like to come over before then” offers Harriet.

Robert is more than pleased at Harriet’s enthusiasm of wanting to spend more time with him. “As long as you don’t think she’ll mind, I’ll be there. I’ll bring the coffee from Starbucks”. Harriet giggles and nods her head at his offer.

Emma watches as Elton and April begin to dance the first dance together, “A long and lasting love”. As she observes them, Emma’s cheek sulks a little more deeply into her hand. Lt. Fitzwilliam and Captain Wentworth have already left for the airport due to their obligatory responsibilities for the upcoming week-end so she has been left abandoned at that end of the table. Elton and April appear to be very happy together.

Listening to the reception music, Emma is lost in her thoughts. The large floral centerpiece blocks her view of the other end of the table so she turns her back to face the opposite direction. If there was a possibility of catching a glimpse of the other side, Emma really doesn’t want to watch Knightly and Harriet spending the evening talking together.

However throughout the evening Emma doesn’t notice that Harriet and Robert are not talking at all. Her thoughts wander to Knightly whom she can’t see either who actually has spent most of the evening chatting with Jennings, Mrs. Dashing, and Alice Hammer who have taken turns sitting beside him to tell of their latest vacation adventures together.

As the evening continues Emma spends some time checking her text messages and playing Sudoku on her phone. She doesn’t feel like participating much tonight. Harriet isn’t talking to her and Jane seems to be spending all of her time with Grant. Jane and Grant have danced nearly every song together and seem oblivious to everyone else in the room.

“Calling all single ladies! It’s time to throw my bouquet!” shouts April in a very loud obnoxious voice “Let’s see who is going to be the next bride!” then adding not so quietly “I’m sure the wedding won’t be as lovely as mine, but at least you will be the bride!”

Hunching her shoulders, Emma sighs and rolls her eyes. The last thing that she wants at this moment is for her single status to be pointed out.

Excitedly Jennings walks over to the bridal table where Emma has spent the evening and grabs Emma’s wrist. “Come on, Emma! You’re my competition! Let’s go!” as she drags Emma out to the middle of the fellowship hall.

On the count of three April tosses a replica of her beautiful bouquet into the air. Alice and Mrs. Dashing raise their arms in the air to possibly catch the promise of future attachment with Jennings, Harriet, and Jane actually making an attempt to catch it. Emma stands with her arms folded in front of her slightly annoyed at this cultural tradition at weddings particularly at this time. The bouquet aims directly for her and she subconsciously catches it just in time before it lands on the floor.

Reaching up from bending over, Emma looks up to find Harriet giving her a disgusted look with Jane seeming disappointed standing next to her. Jennings snaps her fingers swinging her arm in front of her and sighing to herself “Better luck next time. Maybe one day I’ll be a bride again!”

“Would you like it?” asks Emma offering the bouquet to Jennings not sure that she wants to be reminded that there is no one in her life to share the potential meaning of the bouquet with at the moment.

“No dear but thank you. That bouquet has been given to you. My ‘beau’-kay will come some day” giggles Jennings at her own joke doing a little jig back to her assigned table where Mrs. Dashing and Alice Hammer are sitting with Mr. Woodhouse.

As the evening passes, everyone heads for their own home. After changing back into jeans that she brought with her, Emma helps to fold the tablecloths and to sweep the floor. There is only a handful that planned to stay to help clean up. Emma intentionally hasn’t watched Knightly most of the evening not wanting to be hurt any more than necessary if he is really interested in Harriet.

Emma feels such a pain in her heart that it finds it difficult to breathe. Emma thinks Harriet is a wonderful person and Knightly would be really happy with her. Not wanting them to be together would be selfish and not be fair to either one of them.

Both of them deserve as much happiness in life that is available to them even if it means that she will be much lonelier without Knightly than she ever wanted or thought she would be. It is not that she expected Knightly to be with her but she never thought about him being or wanting to be with anyone else but her.

As Emma clears and cleans, her thoughts collide and crash against each other

“We fit so well together. We have so much in common. We think alike. We like the same things. We like doing the same things. We understand each other. We know each other both so well and have such a good time together. It is like we were meant for each other. Why does he want to be with someone else now? Can’t Knightly see that she is the one that fits best with him?” A feeling of sadness and loss overcomes her. “It is really too much”.

Finishing sweeping the floor, Emma finds her purse and heads towards the exit doors in the lobby. Knightly steps out of the chapel, “Emma, I’m glad I caught you before you left”.

“What are you doing in the chapel?” curiously asks Emma trying to find something to say besides what she has been thinking about him.

“I’ve been spending some time alone and it seems like a good place to be to find some answers” honestly replies Knightly.

“Oh. I didn’t mean to disturb you, I was just on my way home” replies Emma not sure what else to say “Where’s Harriet?”

“Harriet left a long time ago” answers Knightly not having a clue why she would be asking him about Harriet’s whereabouts. Robert and her seemed quite happy leaving together earlier in the evening. He thinks that they were headed to a movie but not sure. “I think just about everyone has left. I was waiting for you because I wanted to talk to you.”

Fearing that he wants to discuss his relationship with Harriet with her, Emma responds “I’m not sure that right now is a good time. I’m really tired tonight and not really in a good mood to talk. Some other time might be better.”

“I was hoping that after everyone left there might be a chance for just the two of us to catch up” suggests Knightly but sensing her reluctance “it’s really important. I need to find out some things from you before I make some decisions”.

“Really, I’m not sure that I’m the one you should be talking to especially if it has anything to do with decisions concerning your life” honestly replies Emma knowing that it would be more wise to discuss them with Harriet if they will concern her future. “I really don’t think you want to talk to me.”

Knightly feels concerned for a moment but then observes her. Emma’s eyes are becoming watery and she seems like she is in pain “Are you all right?”

Emma clears her throat and pauses before speaking hoping that her voice will not betray her. Her voice shakes “I’m fine. I’m just feeling a little stressed out this evening. I’ll be fine tomorrow”.

“Tell you what, how about we meet for breakfast tomorrow at our favorite diner” suggests Knightly “I really want to talk with you about the future”.

Emma feels her heart breaking right in front of him at this last statement. Sensing that he really is sincere in his desire to share something with her, somewhere in the depths of her love for him even if it means rejection agrees to meet with him “I’ll see you tomorrow. You can pick me up at ten for brunch. How does that sound?”

“I’ll see you then” smiles Knightly feeling as if a great burden is being lifted from his shoulders. Knightly walks with Emma to her car. Most days, Emma would appreciate this but today fighting back tears is barely more than she can endure. He opens Emma’s car door as she puts her things away and closes it behind her. Knightly whistles his favorite song as he heads to his own car across the parking lot excited for the coming new day.

The next morning, Emma stretches and looks at her clock. “Eight is too early! I don’t even think that I can pry my eyes open. I hate crying all night. I wish that I could skip today. Couldn’t there just be a button that would repeat good moments in life and skip over the ones that are just too much!”

Emma takes a shower and finds an attractive outfit to wear from her closet “Even if he isn’t interested in me, I don’t have to look like death-warmed-over either just to prove his point. He needs to talk. He’s asked to talk to me. I’ll just keep the suffering to myself. He doesn’t need to know how I feel”.

The doorbell rings and Emma walks slowly down the stairs. With tremendous anxiety, Emma feels as if she is walking into an employer’s office to be fired. This isn’t her day but at least a day only lasts twenty-four hours -- now just fourteen more to go . . .

“Hey Emma! Good morning! How are you today?” sweetly asks Knightly more cheerful and handsome than ever.

“Life can be so cruel sometimes” thinks Emma to herself scowling at Knightly’s voice as he stands in front of her.

“Are you feeling better today?” concerned inquires Knightly a little confused by Emma’s reception of his greeting “Did you have a good night’s rest?”

“Actually, I didn’t sleep that well but thanks for asking” replies Emma not sure how to say ‘I cried all night over you and you don’t even care’.

“Ready to go?” asks Knightly wanting to share what is practically bursting from him from rehearsing it so much to himself in hopes that Emma will like what he has to say. By habit, Knightly grabs Emma’s jacket out of the front closet and helps her put it on.

“Thanks” replies Emma thinking how much she will miss Knightly’s kindness and manners as he begins to spend more time with Harriet instead of her.

“It’s always a pleasure” replies Knightly smiling at her while holding the door open and placing a gentle hand on her back as Emma walks in front of him out to his car.

As they sit together in the car, Emma reaches for the radio and turns it on in an attempt to delay the discussion as long as possible. Knightly looks slightly perturbed but then smiles again at her when he hears Emma’s favorite song playing on the station.

A waitress leads them to a quiet booth in the corner. “What would you like to drink?” she asks taping a pencil on her small paper tablet.

“Water would be fine with me. Emma, what would you like?” asks Knightly to Emma who seems overly absorbed in her menu and unaware of what is happening around her.

“What? Oh. I’d like an orange juice, please. Thanks” states Emma trying to find a smile to give to the waitress feeling being more crushed by the second.

After a deep sigh Knightly begins “Emma as you know, I really wanted to talk with you last night. Some new opportunities are coming my way and I want to discuss them with you.”

“Really? Are you sure you want to discuss them with me?” sincerely asks Emma not particularly liking this privileged position at this moment.

“Who else would I discuss them with? I want to talk them over with you” replies Knightly and then adding “because it concerns both of us.”

For the first time Emma looks up and meets his gaze “Okay, tell me what is happening that is so important. I’m listening.”

“I don’t know if you are aware but there is an opening at territorial headquarters that I’ve been offered. It is a promotion with better pay but it means that I would be moving. There are many reasons why this would be a good thing for me to do” starts Knightly.

“Wow, I had no idea. If you took the job, how soon would you be leaving?” asks Emma not expecting this to be the subject of his conversation.

“Well, that answer is a little more complicated. There are some reasons that I want to stay in the area but only if I know that this is where there is some hope for some other areas of my future in regards to my personal life.”

“Here is comes . . .” murmurs Emma to herself but then adds more clearly and loudly “What are you talking about?”

“Emma sometimes you can be so sharp about some things but then totally miss the point at other times” remarks Knightly not sure entirely how to proceed “I’m not sure if we are on the same page and I want to find out what your feelings are”

“Shouldn’t you be asking Harriet?” asks Emma feeling that there is not much more that she can take.

“What about Harriet? What does Harriet have to do with anything?” asks Knightly feeling that the comment is coming from another planet and not the one he is on.

“Aren’t you talking about you and Harriet?” intensely asks Emma feeling that his sarcasm is a bit cruel at this point in the discussion.

“Listen, Emma. Maybe I should start over. There seems to be some disconnect between us. I’ve been offered a job at THQ that will require me to move. I’m asking you if you want me to stay here” frankly states Knightly wondering if Emma is not well.

“You’re asking me if you should stay?” confused asks Emma afraid to connect she is the reason Knightly is discussing his future with her.

“Yes. Do you see ‘us’ together in the future? Or, do you just see you and I remaining friends?” asks Knightly not sure how much more clear and direct he can be but feeling the pressure that he needs an answer from her before responding to THQ on Monday.

“I…I would like for you . . .” starts Emma as tear falls and she quickly wipes it away “I would like for you to stay here or go there whichever you would like to do, but I would like to be with you wherever you decide to be”.

“That’s what I needed to know!” excited states Knightly relieved at Emma’s directness as well impulsively taking both of her hands in his across the table.

“The only question that I have is what about my dad? He can’t live on his own and living in a senior care facility isn’t on his agenda of choice” replies Emma suddenly concerned about what would happen to her dad if they were to move.

“Emma, if it means having you with me then your dad can live with us as well” replies Knightly “Your dad is practically family to me too”.

“I’m not sure he would want to move but he has requested some brochures lately from the Silver Crest residence which is a home for seniors which seems like a place he might enjoy being. He’s mentioned liking the idea of having friends and other people to do things with rather than just me most of the time” contemplates Emma “Some of his friends already live there too.”

Looking at Emma for a moment feeling how much he loves her, Knightly softly says “Emma, I think that we have made a decision without me asking you a question. This isn’t exactly like I planned it.”

Emma intently looks at him feeling that she doesn’t want another world to exist without him in the very center of it. “That’s okay. I think that I understand anyway and you probably already know my answer”.

Bending down on one knee in their favorite diner and pulling a ring out from his pocket, Knightly asks “Emma, I love you. Will you be willing to spend the rest of your life with me?”

The Salvationist - Chapter Thirty Four

Gentle and soft music enters the hallways and fills the air with excitement and expectation. A sweet conversion of string instruments leave their beautiful melodic tones inviting the guests to share in this time of earnest commitment of devotion and love.

As the bride and her bridesmaids wait in line in the hallway to enter the chapel, April looks over every last detail of her gown. She brushes imaginary lint off her sparkling dress and stretches with one large deep breath for one last perfect fit. She dreamily stares at the floral bouquet enhanced with bright gleaming crystals and delicate baby’s breath for a moment.

As if on cue with the clock for the twentieth time, April apprehensively turns to Jane “Do you have the ring?”

“Yes, I have it right here!” Raising her thumb and politely grinning hiding every shade of slight annoyance to April’s constant nagging, Jane shows April the groom’s ring resting neatly in its place on her hand for a gift at a later time.

Flipping large curls against her cheeks Maggie looks at April with confidence, “I have my petals already too! Do you like my hair? Emma did it for me. I love all of the curls! I think they are so pretty!” shaking her head back and forth to demonstrate their durability.

Warmly April smiles in contentedness as her mind wanders down an imaginary checklist to see if there is anything she has forgotten but it appears everything has been faithfully completed until a threatening thought crosses her mind. “Do you see Elton?” nervously asks April realizing that she forgot to include him on her checklist of important details.

“Yes. Not to worry, he’s already standing in his place rocking back and forth on his heels” giggles Emma as she watches Elton anxiously wipe his forehead staring intently out the side window across the room from him in deep contemplation of the upcoming event.

Listening to music on her Ipod while sharing one of her earphones with Maggie and quietly dancing together to the song “Chapel of Love”, Harriet replies “Maggie, you look quite pretty today!”

Maggie bounces her shoulders to the beat super pleased to be included in the big-girls-world, “Look! Our dresses even match!” giggles Maggie as twirls “Does your dress twirl like mine does?” turning to demonstrate the effect of air and speed while becoming dizzy at her efforts.

Maggie comes to a slow stop rocking a little side to side as Jane involuntarily catches Maggie from falling and pushes Maggie back up with her shoulder. Harriet takes out her ear plug and hands her mp3 player which she is inconspicuously hiding in her bridesmaid’s bouquet to Maggie.

Maggie insists “Harriet, let’s listen to “Lover’s Concerto” and “Be my Baby” again!” handing it back to her.

“You forgot “I Say a Little Prayer!” chuckles Harriet at Maggie’s musical unexpected interest in the wedding oldies mixed together just for the occasion.

Watching Maggie and Harriet trying to dance and twirl makes Emma laugh and smile. Feeling someone is watching her, Harriet intuitively turns around to see Emma standing before her and enjoying the moment of impromptu dancing.

Harriet glares at Emma thinking “Now she wants to pretend to be my friend. I’m not going to let her use me today. It’s time she stopped worrying about me and started paying attention to her own love life!” Snubbing Emma, Harriet defiantly turns the other direction with her back to Emma. In response Emma slumps and glances at the floor at Harriet’s intentional and obvious rejection of her friendship.

The last chords of “Chasing Cars” are played. After a slight pause “When You Say Nothing at All” begins, Harriet enters the chapel carrying a lovely brilliant bouquet of amber, crimson, and mango roses which contrast with her pale matching dress.

Concentrating on his chords and enjoying the flow of the music, Robert looks up for a moment to glance at the congregation. Astonished Robert has never seen Harriet with her hair up with tiny ringlets framing her face. Dreamily Robert silently gushes “Harriet is the most attractive I have ever seen her. She’s beautiful!” Harriet looks up from her bouquet and notices Robert watching her. In response to his sincere admiration, Harriet blushes.

Robert can’t stop looking at her while he plays his guitar as Harriet slowly walks down the aisle in time to the music and finds her designated place on the platform. Once is place Harriet secretly glances over to Robert again and remarks to herself “Robert is so wonderful! I’ve always liked him. I hope we have a chance to talk before the evening is over.”

Waiting for her entrance, Emma watches Knightly affectionately smile over at Harriet as she gracefully walks down the aisle more lovely than Emma has seen Harriet look in a long time. An unexpected feeling of uncommon jealousy overwhelms Emma shocking her. As her thoughts run wild she uncomfortably wonders “Could Knighty really like Harriet?” Interrupting her thoughts, Mrs. Dashing expertly cues Emma to get ready.

Watching Emma following behind Harriet, Knightly believes Emma is looking more stunning than ever. Conscientious Emma focuses on keeping her balance and meeting Lt. Fitzwilliam at the end of white embossed trail. Anxious thoughts crowd her ability to experience the blissful moment of her friends. “What if I lose Knightly? What if he no longer wants to be friends with me? Is it too late to become more than friends? Is he even interested in me? Does he really want to be with Harriet? What kind of fool have I been?”

Observing Emma elegantly make her way towards the platform, Knightly is pleasantly delighted to see how lovely Emma looks today but also genuinely rationalizes “I like Emma whether she is in a t-shirt and jeans or a designer dress. Every day she is beautiful to me. I hope there is a chance to spend some time with her afterwards at the reception and mend a few bridges between us. I’d like things to be the way they were again. Maybe possibly even better than they ever have . . .”

Trying to enjoy everything that is happening at the moment, Grant observantly gazes around the room looking at the guests and seeing some of his old friends from home that he hasn’t seen since his childhood. Memories of past friendships from different experiences in his life invade and provoke his thoughts.

Strikingly Jane slowly walks up the aisle, Grant can’t help but think that he hopes Jane will be the one walking towards him one day. He affectionately stares while Jane catches his eye and sweetly smiles back to him. Grant is taken aback. With his whole soul, Grant can hardly wait until he has a chance and opportunity to tell her all that is on his heart.

With her crown of roses, lace, and ribbon, Maggie enters feeling more grand and elegant that she ever has. Today she is truly a princess. She enchantingly throws her petals, and despite what April instructed, waves to her subjects in between each graceful toss.

As the music fades, Elton sways back and forth having lost all sense of feeling and connection to the world around him. His heart races and life is still for a moment. “How will he be has a husband? What will life be like for them? Will they be happy? How will it all work out?”

Disrupting his thoughts, Jennings gives a loud cue on the piano for the bride’s entrance and everyone in the congregation respectfully responds by standing in anticipation of April’s arrival.

Elton feels as if it is difficult to breathe while his ears feel like they are literally on fire. His head slightly turns and sees April slowing moving towards him at the end of the aisle extraordinarily beautiful in her white form fitting wedding dress accented with soft pearls, delicate lace, and sparkling sequins. He feels such love for her that his heart knows that it will burst if one more ounce of care and affection is added in that moment. As his eyes unwillingly comply with his feelings, a tear leaves the hidden space of his thoughts to be shared with everyone sharing this moment of solemn commitment. They smile at each other and the world suddenly seems so perfect that he knows everything will be all right in the end.

As April finds her place next to Elton, Jane hands her colorful bouquet to Emma standing next to her. Dutifully Jane straightens out April’s stunning dress so everyone can view the magnificent train of handcrafted artwork. April hands her exquisite bouquet to Jane in order to grasp both of Elton’s hands into her own to share promises of love and faithfulness.

Captain Wentworth asks for the rings as a token of their commitment and bond with each other. As best man, Knightly deeply digs into his suit coat and hands Elton the diamond ring which matches her set as he places it on April’s hand.

After stating her earnest and sincere vows to Elton, April waits for Jane to hand her Elton’s ring. Jane looks down and finds that the large man’s ring has disappeared off her thumb. Wide-eyed and panicking Jane blankly looks at her hand as April stands before her baffled by its absence.

Sensing the sincere fright of the moment and April’s horror, the bridesmaids scatter and quickly look around them to see if the ring has accidently fallen somewhere on the platform but it abandons their sight and search.

From the bewildered audience, Alice Hammer loudly yells “I found it! It’s in the aisle!” Jumping out of her seat over two guests, Alice quickly picks up the plain golden ring off the carpeted runway. She runs up to the front of the chapel and triumphantly hands the ring to April who gratefully relieved graciously thanks and smiles back at her. Alice turns around in front of the audience before returning her seat raising her hands in cheerful victory. Delighted everyone chuckles in their seats and the wedding celebration continues.

As April and Elton confess and seal their love with a kiss in front of their family and friends, there is a loud cheer that echoes throughout the chapel. Elton takes April’s hands as they blissfully walk down the aisle together to “You are my first, my last, my everything” with the bridal party following closely behind.

The Salvationist - Chapter Thirty Three

“Where is my bow bouquet from the bridal shower? I can’t find it anywhere! It is traditional that the bride-to-be carries her bow bouquet for the wedding rehearsal. Does anyone know where it was put? I really need it” asks April a little frazzled and touching a chord of everyone’s nerves at this point in the wedding planning.

“I found it! It was under the pew still in the box so the bows won’t get crushed. I forgot that I had put it there so it wouldn’t get stepped on” replies Alice Hammer a little winded from all the rushing around that day for last minute items that April suddenly wanted for her wedding.

“Thank you so much! Now my wedding is complete. That reminds me, did you find the rainbow sherbet for the punch?” asks April going through a checklist in her mind.

Emma and Harriet share a quick glance of panic. It didn’t make it to the priority list after going to two grocery stores that happen to have been sold out earlier that afternoon. Jane catches their expression, “Don’t worry, it will be there floating nicely in the punch just as you want it to.”

“Oh thank you! Rainbow sherbet is so much prettier than a solid green or orange. It has such a good flavor to add to the punch too” replies April with her friends analyzing that her hair appears to stand on its end as she begins to panic over every little detail.

Standing on the platform speaking to Captain Wentworth, Elton remarks to his mentor “Thanks so much for being able to come. I know that you leave with the service corps team on Monday but I really appreciate taking the time to come and do our wedding for us.”

“I wanted to be here. Orientation ended this morning and it is a quick flight here and back. The team has a couple of days to get last minute items and prepare before leaving so it came at a good time anyway” Wentworth continues “The week-end gives them time to bond as a group doing some fun things together after a hectic week which is good for them in the long run because the summer will be tough but a very rewarding experience for them”.

“Do you like the group you are working with this year?” Asks Elton who then adds as many challenging memories flash in his mind “I was on a service corps team during my sophmore summer at college. It was one of the best experiences in my life. I would do it again if I had the chance.”

“Ben Wick from your corps is going again. He has become very good friends with one of the daughters of a missionary in Peru. He’s fluent in Spanish and communicates very well. He’s a great asset to the team and has also become a good friend of mine”.

“So, are you ready?” asks Knightly as he finds his place on the platform next to Elton “How does it feel to be committing yourself for a lifetime?”

“The best decision I’ve ever made in my life” immediately responds Elton “My only regret is that I wish that I hadn’t wasted so much time looking in other directions. April is the best thing that has ever happened to me.”

Knightly is pleased with Elton’s sincerity even if slightly shocked by it as well. Personally April would not be on his list of best experiences, but each-to-their-own. He is happy that Elton and April seem so content and in love with each other. “Well at least Bath is not that far away. You and April will definitely have to visit. I’ll be down to see you on business from DHQ of course, but I might come down for a week-end some time and you can show me all of the wonderful things to do around Bath. I hear it is a great place to visit and full of tourists.”

“From what I understand the quarters is rather large and will have some extra guest rooms until we fill them with children of our own. Bring Emma with you when you come. We can go out to dinner and a play if you would like” sincerely replies Elton and thoughtfully continues “Knightly, can I be frank for a moment?”

Knightly not knowing what Elton is talking about responds “Yes, what is it you want to tell me?”

“I think you need to take another look at Emma. You have been friends with her for a long time. She is not a young girl any more. You seem to get on quite well with her too” replies Elton “I’m not setting you up, but just making you aware of a few things.”

“Just so you know, I’ve noticed. But Emma seems busy concentrating on everyone else at the moment. It’s probably her that you need to have this discussion with” replies Knightly a little disappointed that Emma hasn’t talked to him since their conversation at the park nearly a month ago. He has missed her company and many late nights talking together over mostly unimportant information, news or events. He misses her.

“Hey guys! Is this where the party is meeting?” asks Grant coming in about twenty minutes late for the rehearsal and not seeming to notice.

“I’m glad that you could finally make it” replies Wentworth who after spending many years stationed at the training school prefers for people and events to be on time.

“Sorry, I’m late. I had to pick up something very special that I had on order” mischievously replies Grant that makes it obvious to everyone that he has been up to something.

Elton looks directly at him. “This wouldn’t have anything to do with Jane, would it?”

“Yes, how did you know?” asks Grant shocked that Elton would be able to see through him so easily.

“I’ve been there already” remarks Elton “Did you ask her what she wanted?”

“Yes, in a round about way. I think she will like this” replies Grant.

Wentworth and Knightly suspect what the conversation is about but don’t bother to interfere to ask any details.

They can hear April’s voice shouting from the chapel into the songster room where they are all waiting to start. “Hurry up! It’s getting late! I just saw Grant come in. I think it is time to start the rehearsal now! Captain Wentworth, where are you? You need to be out front. It’s time to start!”

Grant rolls his eyes and Knightly chuckles, “I guess that is my cue” states Wentworth heading towards the door “Are you ready, Elton?”

“Ready, as ever . . .” replies Elton ready to begin the steps towards a new life.

Jennings sorts through her music arranging it neatly in one long line of sheets on the piano and begins to play “When You say Nothing at All” by Allison Krauss at the piano as Ann Weston plays the cello next to her.

As the chords from the introduction resound through the chapel, Robert arrives at the last moment from the side door which bangs rather loudly. Startled, he jumps a little forward as a few others do as well. He runs to his place next to Ann Weston on the platform with his guitar in hand tipping his cowboy hat to everyone. “I picked up a bite to eat before coming over. I know we are going to a restaurant later but I wasn’t sure how long this rehearsal would take and I was getting hungry”.

April’s voice interrupts the rehearsal from the hallway, “Robert! That is a nice hat but you CANNOT wear it during the wedding even if it is white. Is that understood?”

Robert replies “Yes ma’am” as everyone else in the wedding party giggles. It will be a new thing to see Robert without his Stetson.

As the introduction starts over, Harriet is cued by Mrs. Dashing standing beside her at the entrance to the chapel and slowly walks down the aisle to the music. Wanting to practice walking down the aisle in her stilettos that Emma talked her into buying at the last minute, Harriet slightly teeters in her heels and jeans. She meets Grant and clings to his arm in order to catch her balance as he walks Harriet to her place on the platform. Emma grins noticing Harriet’s “move”. She thinks that it is wonderful planning by April to have them matched as a couple for the wedding.

An obnoxious voice is heard again from the foyer “I want them to meet at the top of the aisle in front of the altar and pause for a moment before separating and then moving to the platform” shouts April who has spent many hours changing her mind about what exactly she wants to happen “I think we need to do that again!”

As the wedding coordinator, Mrs. Dashing motions for Harriet to come back to the doors of the chapel. Jennings and Ann take in a deep breath and begin to play again with Robert intently focusing on his playing and lost in the music. For a second, Robert looks up and thinks Harriet is the loveliest he has ever seen her. It’s been a long few weeks. He misses a couple of notes, but soon catches up with the others.

As they have been instructed, Harriet and Grant meet and separate. Grant smiles at Harriet grateful that the rehearsal is finally started and will soon be over.

Next Emma walks in and meets Lieutenant Fitzwilliam who has flown in for the day and tomorrow before his welcoming the next day on Sunday at his new corps. He was Elton’s best friend during his second year of training and a friend of April’s as well. In her mind Emma thinks that Lt. Fitzwilliam seems like a very kind man but not exactly her type.

As Lt. Fitzwilliam takes her to the assigned location on the platform, Emma glances over to Knightly who is standing with his hands clasped in front of him staring out in space lost in his own thoughts. She wonders if he is still mad and disappointed over her behavior at the picnic. Emma misses being around him and the comfortableness they have with each other. She wonders if their relationship will ever be the same again.

Interrupting Emma’s thoughts, April yells “Stop! Stop! Stop! I forgot to tell the groomsmen how to find their places again!”

“I think they are doing all right, April” replies Elton “We’re all where we are suppose to be”.

“If you think so, just remember everyone how you got to where you are” replies April wishing that there were not so many details to remember for just one hour.

Pausing and trying to find some comfort, Jennings stretches her legs and arms above her head at the piano while waiting for April to finish yet another instruction. On Mrs. Dashing’s cue and another shrug of her shoulders, Jennings starts the music again with Robert and Jane to accompany her.

Having been a bridesmaid many times, Jane slowly enters meeting Knightly at the altar. As Jane takes her place on the platform April’s voice echoes through the chapel. “Jane, remember to straighten out my dress once I get to the front where Elton is waiting for me. I want the train to look good in the pictures!” Jane nods and gives a ‘thumbs up’ from the front of the chapel as Grant checks his watch and wonders how long this rehearsal is going to take.

This time a lively Maggie comes down the aisle imagining that she is a beautiful princess pretending to throw petals of pink roses along the aisle. She waves like a queen to her subjects waiting in the pews whispering under her breath “elbow, elbow, wrist, wrist . . . “

Again April’s nagging voice is heard from the hallway, “I think Maggie you need to slow down. You don’t need to wave, just throw your petals gracefully to the floor. Honey, take your time walking down the aisle. This is a special day and you can take your time!”

Obediently, Maggie walks backwards to the place she began with basket in hand and after a few mouth exercises and neck stretches Jennings compliantly starts the music again.

As everyone finally reaches their places in the front, Jennings arrives at the conclusion of the song with Robert and Ann in time next to her. Jennings makes a dramatic musical cue for the entrance of the bride for the audience to stand. Mr. Weston along with Mr. Woodhouse and Alice Hammer stand in the pews to represent the guests tomorrow.

Valiantly April triumphantly walks in with her bouquet of silk and ribbon bows from the packages at her bridal shower. April glows as she walks down the aisle smiling at Elton. In response, Elton looks so sincere and full of love for her that the others finally understand why they are together.

After the longer-than-expected rehearsal everyone meets together again at the Little Italy restaurant for a family style Italian dinner. Knightly pulls out Emma’s chair so she can sit down next to him. Emma feeling much better things between them might possibly be looking up takes a seat. He then also pulls out a chair for Harriet to sit at his other side who is thrilled by his attention. Robert walks up and finds the empty chair beside Harriet settling in.

Grant takes a seat across from Emma with Jane at his side. Elton and April are next with Lt. Fitzwilliam and Captain Wentworth across from each other. At the next table but nearby sits Jennings, Alice Hammer, Mrs. Dashing, Maggie, Mr. Woodhouse, Ann, and Mr. Weston.

The waitress takes their soda requests to coincide with the dinner has been previously ordered. April seems finally relaxed and chatty next to Elton whom she frequently touches on the hand as she shares humorous stories of their former days and session mates at the training school with the Lt. Fitzwilliam and Captain Wentworth.

Cautiously Knightly asks Emma not knowing how she is currently feeling towards him but taking a chance “How are you doing? Did you enjoy your time at congress?”

“Actually, I’m doing pretty good. Things have been picking up this past month due to promoting our summer camping and day camp programs. Harriet has put together some fantastic posters that we’ve been able to use for direct mail as well” replies Emma not wanting to be too personal yet until she can figure out if he is still mad at her.

“I made quite a few posters from pictures that Emma took and used some new designs that I’ve been thinking of lately” replies Harriet pleased that Knightly would know of her creative projects.

“They were fantastic!” exclaims Robert “I saw the proofs the other day while I was at area command dropping off a few things for Mr. Weston. Harriet is a true artist!”

“Thank you!” giggles Harriet feeling very complimented at the moment “That’s really sweet of you to say so!”

“Where were the photographs taken?” asks Knightly curious to know what Emma has been doing lately.

“I took quite a few at camp a few week-ends ago and then some are from stock files of photos from previous years” replies Emma “but I do think some of the compositions were quite good with the reflections, shadows and lighting that Harriet chose”.

“Harriet, do you still have your sketch book? Did you bring it with you?” asks Robert.

“Yeah, you remembered! I have it at home. I can show it to you later after the wedding tomorrow” pleased remarks Harriet.

“What sort of things do you draw Harriet?” asks Knightly “I don’t think that I’ve ever seen any of your sketches.”

“I like to draw people – especially eyes, but really just about anything. I like landscapes and flowers as well” replies Harriet excited to talk about her artwork with her friends “Would you like to see it too?”

“After you show Robert your sketchbook, I can take a look” states Knightly smiling and glad that Robert has joined them tonight.

Robert leans around Harriet and asks Emma “Do you sketch or draw, Emma?”

“Unfortunately, no . . . I like to take photographs. People I draw tend to look like stick figures” honestly replies Emma.

“But she is a very good photographer” replies Knightly “I’ve seen tons of her albums.”

Smiling at Knightly, Emma is pleasantly surprised by his compliments tonight. After finishing his meal, Knightly leans back and crosses his leg at the knee. Knightly rests his hand on the back of Emma’s chair and appears to be quite comfortable and relaxed as his normal self again with her. He looks at her often and catches her eye when she happens to glance over during their discussions throughout the evening.

A little further down the table, Robert and Harriet chat away about the latest movie blockbuster they have seen earlier that week. Robert and Harriet quote dialogue from the movie back and forth to each other in between fits of laughter.

As the conversation continues, Knightly leans towards Emma listening more closely to what she is telling him. He tells her about the news at divisional headquarters and some of his plans for the future. Emma feels that there is no place that she feels happier than when she is with him.

Throughout the evening, Harriet shares some funny jokes and other stories that keep the entire table entertained. Jane and Grant are smiling and appear to be content. But in Emma’s opinion, Grant seems much quieter than usual. Jane is always quiet so she can’t tell for sure if tonight is any different. Harriet talks to Grant quite a bit and he seems to be responding by laughing to whatever she is saying which pleases Emma. But something is different about tonight and Emma can’t quite figure out what it is.

As dessert is finished, Grant asks Jane “Do you need a ride home?”

“I was going to take Jane home” replies Emma wishing that Harriet would have more time with Grant.

“Since Grant is ready to go now and it looks like you are having a good time, I think that I will go ahead and leave with Grant” replies Jane “I’ll see you early tomorrow”.

Emma notices that Harriet doesn’t seem to care “Alright, I hope you have a restful night. It is going to be a big day tomorrow!”

They say good-bye to everyone before leaving. Grant places his hand in the middle of Jane’s back to guide her out the door. Emma is a bit perplexed because she hasn’t seen Grant act even remotely tender with anyone.

“Well, I’ve got to work tomorrow before the wedding in the afternoon. I’ll see y’all later” replies Robert winking at Harriet who giggles next to him.

Harriet takes another bite of her chocolate cake as the group dismantles. Emma asks Harriet “Do you need a ride home?”

For a second Harriet looks somewhat disappointed which Emma catches but doesn’t understand. “Thanks. Yes, I do” replies Harriet rather monotone in Emma’s opinion.

As they get into the car, Harriet sulks into the passenger seat which Emma notices but can’t understand.

“Is everything all right, Harriet?” Asks Emma clearly missing something that evening.

“I really appreciate you giving me a ride but I was hoping for a ride with someone else” replies Harriet.

“I know, but he already left with Jane and I thought that you would still need a ride because he was gone” sincerely replies Emma “I was just thinking of you.”

“What do you mean gone? He didn’t leave with Jane” responds Harried not understanding what Emma is implying.

“Yes, didn’t you see him walk out the door with Jane? He sat next to her too. I’m sorry that didn’t work out either” empathetically remarks Emma.

“Ohhh . . . I’m not interested in Grant. He likes Jane!” laughs Harriet that Emma could be so mistaken.

“What do you mean you’re not interested in Grant? You’ve liked him this entire time! He “rescued” you – remember!” emphatically states Emma raising her voice.

“I don’t like him! I was “rescued”, you remember? He saved me when Elton was snubbing me at the concert” replies Harriet.

“What concert? Christmas or Easter?” asks Emma totally confused and not remembering anything in particular happening at either one.

“You know! - Easter. April was being a total twit to me at that time because of Elton. He stopped talking and walked away from me in the middle of a sentence because April gave him a look. Then of course, Mrs. Bennett was hanging around the biggest gossip in the entire division – possibly the territory!” retorts Harriet shocked that Emma cannot remember this entirely painful experience for her.

“Who saved you? I don’t even remember anybody talking to you!” replies Emma.

“He sat with his arm around me the whole second half of the concert. He made a space for me to sit next to him!” shouts Harriet not understanding how Emma did not notice and after so many conversations with her.

“Who are you talking about? Knightly was sitting between us . . .” replies Emma not connecting Knightly at all to anything that has to do with Harriet.

“Yes . . . “ replies Harriet rolling her eyes at Emma.

“You can’t be serious! Knightly doesn’t like you. Harriet, he’s not even your type!” snaps Emma with a sudden burst of jealousy “He would never be interested in you!’

“How would you know? How do you know who he would like or not like? You haven’t even talked to him in over a month. You just started talking to him again tonight!” rebukes Harriet very mad at Emma at this moment.

“Knightly is . . . well . . . a lot older than you. He’s a businessman kind-of guy” replies Emma disappointed that Harriet would like Knightly as well.

“Well, who am I suppose to like? Elton thinks he’s too good for me. Robert isn’t good enough in your opinion and Grant obviously likes someone else. Who do I have your ‘permission’ to like Emma? And by the way, just in case you haven’t notice that’s not your choice to make!” shouts Harriet angry that even now after all this time Emma could be such a snob.

“It’s not like that. It’s just that . . . it is a surprise that’s all. I didn’t expect the guy that you liked to be Knightly. I really thought that you liked Grant instead” sadly replies Emma “If you like Knightly and you think he likes you too, I don’t really have a say in it one way or another. You’re a great person, Harriet. Any guy would be lucky to have you” states Emma feeling an overwhelming emotion of sadness and loss.

“Next time, maybe I need to keep my feelings to myself since I’m not good enough to like who I want to. Maybe, you’re not good enough to be my friend!” yells Harriet slamming the car door behind her with tears streaming down her eyes running into Alice Hammer’s home.

Emma sits there stunned for a moment as questions ramble one after the other in her thoughts, “How could she be so mistaken? When did Grant start liking Jane? Why does Harriet like Knightly? Knightly is so wonderful, but he should be wonderful just for her not everyone else. Does he like Harriet? He talked with her most of the evening. He told her how much he likes Harriet now that he’s gotten to know her better at the picnic. He always talks to her too. Harriet is so funny and has a terrific personality. Why wouldn’t he like Harriet? Who wouldn’t like Harriet?”

Emma pulls away from the curb and heads towards her home. It has been a very long, confusing and frustrating day. Tomorrow will come soon and perhaps will be better.
