The Covenant - Chapter Twenty-Four

"Really, Annie why don't you wear this dress tonight?" advises Lydia Russell pulling out a dress that she bought for Annie on their last shopping spree at an exclusive clothing store "I bought it for you as a gift and you haven't worn it yet.  I think tonight would be a perfect night to wear it."
Annie shifts in front of the mirror having already chosen an attractive dress but one that she has worn for many special events. "I don't know.  Do you think it will be too much?"
"You will look beautiful in it.  We're going to The Met tonight, there are all extremes of dress there from divine and elegant to casual.  Whatever you choose to wear, you will fit in" then sarcastically adding Lydia Russell "Of course I wouldn't wear shorts and a t-shirt.  I wouldn't doubt they would let you in."
"It is very pretty.  I like the simple lines of the black dress" agrees Annie holding it up to her in the mirror and taking her other hand to hold her hair up as tresses fall down along her cheeks "It is rather flattering."
"Good.   I've made appointments to have our hair done in an hour.  I like the idea of an up-do, it looks quite nice on you" suggests Lydia Russell "You'll have such a good time with Elliot tonight."
"Yes, I suppose so" half-heartedly agrees Annie wondering why she has a continual nagging feeling that he isn't all that he presents himself to be.
"You are being ridiculous!" chides Lydia Russell  "At Commissioner Darlrymples dinner all he could talk about was you and how wonderful you are.  He seems very charmed by you, Annie.  Any other woman would be ecstatic that such a catch would be interested in them.  He's probably the most eligible man in the Army right now and you're acting as if he is just one in the ocean."
"He's nice and has been a good friend to me, but something is missing" honestly explains Annie "He likes to flirt a lot too which makes me uncomfortable.  He seems to crave a lot of attention."
"You're just a little jealous.  Women do throw themselves at him because he is so attractive.  It doesn't matter how many woman want him but that he only wants you" advises Lydia Russell.
"I would rather that he didn't provoke their attention even if he wants me.  I want someone who feels that I am enough for them" replies Annie resolute in her feelings "I want someone who loves me more than their need to be admired."
"Well, he's young and a little immature on that point.  But I'm sure it is just a phase" compromises Lydia Russell having observed his friendly manner with both Beth and Ariel Clay when Annie is not present "Once he is committed to you so will be his heart."
"I'd rather find someone who in loving me commits before anything agreement is made" argues Annie.
"He will, dear.  He's almost there, I am sure of it" encourages Lydia Russell "His whole countenance lights up when he talks about you.  He's quite taken with you even if you don't realize it yet."
"I  wish he's save some of that sparkle just for me, he seems to be quite generous in sharing it when there is someone pretty around that has noticed him" counters Annie "At least he is very nice to me and he does make me feel special and the most important person in the room when I am with him."
"See ... I know you feel the same way ... he does care about you" agrees Lydia Russell smiling while standing behind Annie in the mirror and placing her hands on each of her shoulders.  "He's been attractive to you because of what you have on the inside of you, tonight you're going to show him a little sparkle of your own on the outside."
"I guess you're right.  I certainly haven't encouraged him to like me but we seem to get along well.  He likes who I am without trying to impress him at all" considers Annie "which really isn't that bad of quality to have".
"Before you know it, you'll be falling in love with him too" delighted states Lydia Russell "it doesn't hurt that he comes from such a prestigious Army heritage and that he has a little money to go around too.  He'll make a very nice home for you Annie and he loves you too. What more does woman want?"
"I don't need money or a name, but I do want someone that sincerely loves me and that I love with their whole heart too" sighs Annie not sure that Elliot would even understand what it means to love someone with their entire soul.
"We shall see" smug lydia Russell is determined to convince Annie that Elliot is the right man for her "I'll meet you downstairs in the lobby in about ten minutes and we can leave for our hair appointments".
The door closes behind Lydia Russell as Annie can hear her greet her father "Oh Mr. Elliot, you look so handsome today!  I'll have to watch out for you!"
After Lydia Russell leaves, Annie collapses on the bed and stares at her phone glancing at pictures of Rick and the kids from the summer.  Her heart fills with sadness and longing remembering sweet moments that they shared just a few short months ago.   She enlarges the picture that Rick took of them with her phone as they were arriving at the airport to return to the states.  The silence is deafening as she feels her heart pounding as tears try to force their way to be felt.  Annie swallows and takes in a deep breath staying still in hopes that the stillness will quiet her heart as well.
A few tears escape which she quickly brushes away, blinking to prevent anymore from leaving their home.  "I won't care" she states out loud to convince herself of a new mantra "I need to move on.  Rick has already forgotten about me and I need to deal with it."
She forces herself to get up from the bed and finds her coat laying on the chair.  As she's placing her scarf around her neck, Annie can feel the determination for a new start building within her.  "I will be fine" she confidently tells her reflection in the mirror as her heart refuses to agree with her.
A few hours later the Eliot family is gathered together in the living room.   Everyone is dressed and ready to go, but they are waiting on Annie to finish up since both Beth and Ariel Clay took as long as possible in the bathroom with their own accessory needs.
"I'm coming" yells Annie from the closed door "I'm just putting my shoes on."
"I don't mind waiting" offers Elliot looking forward to seeing Annie dressed up for the first time to attend the opera accustomed to seeing her in jeans and sweaters "I know women like to have a few extra minutes to look special."
"I wish she would hurry up.  She's always last" pouts Beth "I don't understand why it takes her so long.  She's had the room to herself for fifteen minutes, that's plenty enough time to get yourself ready."
"Maybe we took a little too long today.  I know that I an hour to myself and I think you had a little longer than even that" apologetically adds Ariel Clay knowing that Beth selfishly monopolized the bathroom for two hours to prepare for tonight.
"She's fine.  Annie never needs much time to get ready.  She doesn't do anything with herself anyway" begrudgingly  remarks Beth jealous of her sister's natural beauty  "I don't know why she bothers at all, she doesn't care if anyone is looking at her or not."
A few seconds later, Annie walks out into the room.  "You look beautiful Annie!" exclaims her father "I've never seen you look so pretty before.  You might be in competition with me for the most attractive member of this family tonight!
Elliot moves to stand next to her.  He quietly places her coat on her shoulders as he whispers in her hear "You look lovely tonight, never more beautiful."
"Thank you" Annie blushes looking down wondering what all the fuss is about or the envious look in the eyes of her sister and her best friend.
"Annie, see I told you that dress was perfect for you.  It looks like it was made specifically for you!" exclaims Lydia Russell thrilled with her expertise of choosing exactly the right dress.
Shyly Annie smiles and checks to make sure that not too much is showing but is met with a fierce look from Lydia Russell of "Don't-you-dare-touch-that-to-cover-anything -up!"  So Annie decides to cover herself with her coat anyway.  Elliot catches her eyes and lingers in  his stare for a few seconds longer than usual while moving closer to her and placing his arm around her waist refusing to let go as she walks towards the door.
The Opera is entertaining.  Each have brought their own pair of opera glasses to watch back and forth between the stage and the words translated into English in the electronic captions in front of them.  But Elliot often "borrows" Annie's glasses and makes quiet commentary of the show, either brushing her cheek with his hand to whisper to her and staying very close to tell of his secret commentary.
Annie is very flattered by Elliot's attention but her thoughts drift to a discussion she had with Rick about the very same opera not to long before.  She sighs and wonders why the person she loves isn't the one sitting her next to her whispering sweet nothings into her ear.
The opera has an outstanding finale. As they begin to leave the auditorium, Elliot grabs her hand as they exit The Met for the subway.  Lydia Russell smiles smugly in her achievement at creating such a great match.
In contrast, Beth has met a very attractive young man during the intermission and appears not to be bothered that Elliot is lost within the depths of her sister.  The man walks with them to the station getting Beth's number and setting up to meet her tomorrow which immensely pleases her.
Mr. Eliot walks with Lydia Russell on one side and Ariel Clay on the other, both showering him with compliments on his choice of entertainment for the evening, his ego being sufficiently stroked.
As Elliot incessantly continues to talk, keeping as close as possible to her, Annie thoughts trail to another place and time.  She seems a familiar figure in the shadows on the other side of the fountain.  She talks within herself "Don't be ridiculous.  It couldn't be him.  You need to get yourself together!"
Noticing that Annie hasn't responded to the question causing a break in his pretentious soliloquy, Elliot asks "Is everything all right?"
"Yes, I just thought that I saw someone that I knew but I was mistaken" explains Annie shaking her head "It's been a wonderful night. Thank you."
"My pleasure.  We'll definitely have to do this again" smiles Elliot as he pulls her closer to him and kisses her cheek as her family watches quite thrilled with the attachment that appears to be growing.

The Covenant - Chapter Twenty-Three

"How did you manage it?" excitedly asks Beth thinking about what she will wear "Her schedule is usually terribly busy!  Can you imagine, the Commissioner personally asked us to dinner!"
"Yes, it is quite a privilege"  agrees Mr. Elliot beaming from his accomplishment of successful scheming with her secretary "She must have recognized our name and felt it necessary to meet with us".
"The Elliot name is quite well known and respected as it has been for generations" confirms Lydia Russell licking her lips and touching up a few loose strands of hair feeling quite pleased to be associated with such a prestigious Army family "It was so gracious of her to include me in the invitation as well along with your family.  But I've been so close to all of you" taking a moment to glance over at Mr. Elliot with a knowing smile "that it is no wonder that she considers me a part of the family".
"It's so nice too that Elliot was invited as well" adds Ariel Clay feeling elated that he is joining them for dinner too. "Elliot is so attractive, don't you agree Annie?"
"He's nice" nonchalantly confirms Annie "I'm sure you'll have a good time talking with him.  He will keep all of you entertained".
"Won't you be there?" snidely asks Beth "The invite was for all of us.  It would be rather rude not to show up.  How often are you going to get a dinner invitation to the Commissioner's home?"
"I've made prior arrangements to meet my college friend Tanisha Smith for dinner.  It's been ages since we've seen each other" explains Annie grabbing her coat and putting on a knitted hat to keep her warm.
"What is this?  You're not coming with us?" angrily asks Mr. Elliot narrowing his eyes at Annie "The dinner is not optional.  You will come with us."
"I'd like to but I've already made plans to meet Tanisha for tonight which was planned as soon as I found out we were coming to New York" explains Annie "She has gone out of her way to make a really good homemade dinner for us that I'm not going to miss."
"No, you'll be coming with us.  I won't have you embarrassing me by missing this overwhelmingly gracious invitation from the Commissioner.  I would I explain you missing out on seeing her for a night with a friend from college?" firmly states Mr. Elliott placing his hands on his hips to defend his stance.
"I'm sorry father.  I'm not going to dinner tonight.  If we get invited again, I'll go.  I've already promised Tanisha and that is where I will be.  I'll see you later" counters Annie holding her anger inside while heading towards the front door.
"I'm not making any excuses for you.  I'm not happy Annie.  You will regret this decision" warms Mr. Elliot feeling disgruntled that he will not have his entire family with him in an attempt to impress the Commissioner. "This is not a very mature decision to make."
Looking back at her dad, Annie sighs and quietly closes the door behind her glad to not have to endure another evening of boasting and arrogance as her family brags how much better they are than others around them.  In contrast, Annie thoroughly enjoys Tanisha's company and finds her honestly and integrity very refreshing.
Arriving at Tanisha's home, Annie finds comfort in her longtime friend's presence.  They pick up where they left off when they last saw each other a couple of years before.   Tanisha rotates her wheelchair near the fireplace where she has a fresh plate of cookies waiting for Annie's visit.
"I'm so glad you were able to come!" gushes Tanisha not having very many visitors lately to her home.
"I should have come sooner.  We have so much to catch up on!" smiles Annie remember many shared moments of fun and laughter with her best friend.
"So, how was your summer?" asks Tanisha wanting to delve right into the more personal information that is shared between close friends "Were  you interested in anyone?"
"Well, I was but I don't think he was interested in me" confesses Annie shifting in her place on the sofa.
"Really, who was he?" curiously asks Tanisha as her eyes dance in expectation of a good romantic story "What was he like?  Is he cute? Was he anything like Rick?  It took you forever for you to get over him ... if you are over him yet."
"Actually, it was Rick. He came back from missionary service and was leading a service corps team to Peru during his technical furlough time" explains Annie wondering how her friend will respond to the news.
"They usually take vacation time, not another assignment, before going overseas again or taking up a local appointment.  How did that happen?" asks Tanisha a little confused for this unusual situation in Army policy "Why didn't he take a break before going out again?"
"Ummm, I hadn't thought about it much.  But he volunteered to lead the team" considers Annie a little surprised by the realization of this new reality.
"Was this before or after you found out you were on the team?" asks Tanisha wondering if Rick still wasn't over her friend either.
"You know, I don't know.  He volunteered to lead when his friend, Ben Wick, who is quite capable and experienced but was grieving over losing his girlfriend in a car accident.   Ben Wick said wasn't ready to lead a team but he would like to be one to refocus his energy.  I was already chosen, but didn't know because Alice Hammer forgot to tell me that she signed me up" explains Annie for the first time wondering if some buried feelings might have still existed in Rick for his willingness to go along.
"I love Alice Hammer.  How is she doing?  What about Jennings?  They always seem to be quite the team.  When I was a teen they were co-counselors for corps cadets and they were so much fun!  They helped me through a lot of tough times just because they were listening and being there for me.  I didn't always pay attention to what they were trying to tell me but they always had my best interests at heart, I just wish that I had realized it at the time" regretfully acknowledges Tanisha adjusting the blanket covering her still legs in the chair "Maybe I would have been a little wiser about the friends I was hanging out with and what they were into."
"Well, I'm glad you're still here.  I don't know what life would have been like without you! You've definitely made my life better by being in it" cheerfully encourages Annie genuinely grateful that such a good friend came into her life.
"So, what happened this summer?" carefully asks Tanisha "Were you guys back together at all?"
"No, not really.  I think we parted as friends though.  He seemed more interested in Lauren Musgrove than me." sadly explains Annie feeling a deep ache within her "Lauren  hurt herself falling from a rock and he ended up returning to Peru to keep an eye on her while she is recovering. I'm sure they are a 'together' by now"
"Oh...that's really too bad.  I've always felt that you would make a great couple.  I remember your family giving you a really hard time while you were dating him because he wanted to be an officer and they wanted you to be a lawyer or doctor, I don't really remember something like that instead.  You ended up to be a nurse which suits you quite well though" reflects Tanisha "Do you ever want to be an officer or has that idea moved beyond this moment?"
"Actually I do think of it quite often. But there wouldn't be a way to pay my student loans on the amount of an allowance an officer makes unless God did a miracle and I'm not sure I would want to be a single officer" honestly admits Annie wishing that someone would come into her life with the same goals.
"I imagine being a single officer is tough and lonely at times" agrees Tanisha feeling the pain and grief of being alone since losing her fiance in the accident even though she lived. "It's hard living alone or having to share a home with someone that you don't know that well or may even not like just because you're assigned together and what the corps can afford."
"I believe that God could bring the right man into my life, but I don't want to be one of those who choose someone just because they share the same occupation.  I'd rather find someone who first loves me and shares my calling, and also fits nearly every other area of who I am quite well too.  Marriage requires much more than just fitting the identity of being an officer and being able to work with them" and then more reflectively Annie reflectively continues "I don't want to compromise this most sacred area of life just so I have someone and I'm not lonely anymore even if I enjoy the calling and role of being an officer."
"Well, maybe God will bring along the right man when the time is right.  I'm disappointed to hear it won't be Rick, but someone will come along I'm sure.  Have you met anyone else?" trying to refocus the conversation asks Tanisha not wanting her friend to feel sad.
"Yes, but I don't know.  His name is Elliot and I met him on the trip.  He's here in New York and already became friends with my family before  I came here and I just ran into him again" offers Annie "I think Beth is interested in him though."
"Beth has always been interested in whoever you are at any one time.  Rick has been the only one who hasn't fallen into her trap.  He genuinely cared about you.  But you'll find someone else who will love you like that too" encourages Tanisha "Maybe Elliot could be the man for you."

"I don't know.  He's nice and very charming.  But he's indiscriminate with his attention.  I don't know what to think of him yet" cautiously explains Annie straightening her jeans and considering the past few days.
"Elliot is an uncommon name.  I use to know someone by that name, but there is no way it could be the same person.  It was years ago after we lost contact for awhile after college" remembers Tanisha  "This guy sounds very nice.  You need to give him a chance.  It sounds like Rick might have moved on and it would probably be a good thing if you could make up your mind to do that too rather than dwelling on what might have been."
"You're right.  Elliot is here with me now and I need to give that a chance.  As far as I'm aware, Rick will probably come home engaged to Lauren by the way I keep hearing things are going between them.  Rick writes but doesn't say much about her except they are spending time together.  But I know Lauren's number one priority on her agenda is to marry him and she is very aggressive too while usually getting what she wants.  She's  told everyone how much she is interested in him and implies that his interest is returned.  He doesn't have much choice other than to give into her.  He would have to be awfully strong not to give into her constant attention."
"Well knowing you, I'm sure that you are already praying about it and that things will work out as they need to" supports Tanisha having seen many answers to prayers numerous times in her own life even if the answers weren't exactly what she expected they would be.
"You're right.  I think that I'll give Elliot a chance maybe things will work out this time" contemplates Annie hoping to take to heart her friend's suggestion in spite of the daily ache of missing Rick that continues every day since Annie last saw him.

The Covenant - Chapter Twenty-Two

"How do you like it?" asks Elliot taking another rather large bite of pizza as the cheese hangs and pulls away from him .
"It's delicious!" agrees Annie enjoying the mixture of spices and then taking another bite of dough with a crispy crust "I'll definitely have to get this again while I'm here!"
"I can take you around to some of my favorite places.  We need to go to Little Italy so you can have some of the best pasta in the country" suggests Elliot grinning at her with a twinkle in his eye "There are so many places in the city that I think you would like".
While finishing up their lunch together, Elliot shares a few comical stories of his childhood and openly laughs with full gusto. Annie intently listens and enjoys his humor and his eloquent way with words.
As they get up to leave, Elliot helps Annie put her coat on and pushes in her chair.  She smiles back at him enjoying being treated so well.
"Are you up for a walk?" asks Elliot leaning in close to her and putting his arm gently around her.
"Sure!" confirms Annie tying her colorful pashmina around her neck and places her hands into the pockets of her coat "It looks like there a few interesting shops along this way."
Elliot leans over close to her and nudges her arm with his own, "We'll make it an adventure and see how many unusual things we can find."
"Sounds like a bit of a challenge" agrees Annie feeling the best that she has for weeks since saying goodbye to Rick before he returned to Peru.
"Excellent!"  excitedly exclaims Elliot "Let's go into this tourist store, they're bound to have something that fits our qualifications."
As other customers enter the store, Elliot holds the door open for her as Annie heads towards the t-shirts looking for a gift for Jennings to bring back home with her.  Elliot checks out the lady liberty sunglasses, the yellow taxi cut-out playing cards, the NY Yankees baseball caps, and the other snow globes holding miniatures of famous monuments in the city.
As Annie contemplates what bargain t-shirts to buy at 3 for $10, Elliot stands next to her and shows off his chocolate M & M  earmuffs "What do you think?" modeling them for her.
"I think they are definitely 'you'!" giggling Annie grinning back at him while he heads towards the counter in a overly dramatic runway walk, posing and then glancing back at her every two or three steps with an instant cheesy smile.
A few minutes later, Annie has finally made a choice and decides it is time to check-out.  She watches Elliot leaning on the counter with his ankles crossed flirting with the pretty clerk who appears to be barely out of high school. The girl giggles in response to his remarks and leans forward on the other side of the counter giving him a clear view of more than is necessary.
As their conversation continues Elliot laughs but then sees Annie and moves towards her direction placing his arm around her shoulder while leaning in very closing touching her arm and shoulder to see what she is holding, "So how many did you end up getting?"
"I think that I ended up with six for the boys and a couple for Jennings to wear" explains Annie slightly uncomfortable but not exactly sure why "I don't want to buy my gifts all in the same place."
"You're right.  There are some great shops still to come" encourages Elliot grabbing her hand but waving goodbye to the cute clerk with the other one.  She waves goodbye to her chatty customer and then places her chin on the palm of her hand resting on the counter and sighs.
As they walk, Annie manages to free herself from his grasp for a moment as he points to different artistic buildings along the way.  The architecture varies from all different periods through the last century. Balconies, alcoves, window frames all tells their own intimate stories of a former time and place. The neighborhood shops are close together as the locals carry a shopping bag that can easily be taken up a few flights of stairs to their small apartments.
The sidewalks are full of people headed to their determined destinations.  An occasional dog wagging his friendly tail on a leash joins their exhausted master after a long day of work.  Many strollers with other toddlers in tow, lead the way with their nannies as they chat for a minute to exchange their schedules to meet later after their duties are done at the end of the day.
The yellow taxis honk and swerve to be the first to greet a new customer impatiently waving their hand while taking a step into the cluttered street gutter for a clearer view.
Stepping onto the next busy street as the crosswalk light warns her of exactly how many seconds she has left to accomplish her task, Annie can see various fresh colorful vegetables and fruits lined in neat rows under the forest green canopy of the local corner grocery store.  Just around the corner, beautiful flowers of all kinds, carnations, roses, daisies, are neatly arranged in buckets and other arrangements for purchase outside the shops.
Street venders have set up tables lined with merchandise along the side streets.  Annie peruses the 'almost' designer purses and faux leather wallets, the exquisite scarves and hats, examining all mediums of artwork, framed photos of famous celebrities and places, and considering a few used books at very discounted prices among the mixture of tables as they walk down Broadway.
"I don't think I've seen so many people all in one place before who are all headed in different directions rather than being there for one purpose" considers Annie "At home there isn't much traffic so even that is quite different.  I'm glad that we decided not to drive here this time".
"Here, you want one?" offers Elliot handing her a hot dog smothered in one too many things from a food truck parked next to them on the corner "They are the best!"
"Mmmm ... they are really good" enjoys Annie taking another bite "I didn't know a hot dog could taste so good!"
"Let me get that for you" states Elliot taking the napkin in his hand and wiping a sliver of mustard from her lip while pausing to stare into her eyes for a moment and then looking back to her lips while moving closer to her.
"Thank you" nervously Annie replies taking her own napkin and wiping her face for any other imaginary mustard or ketchup that might be evident. "Is it all gone?"
"Yes, I think so" states Elliot moving closer to her face to inspect any errant condiment making Annie feel slightly uncomfortable but excited at the same time.  He smiles at her and then pauses before backing away "Yes, it looks like I got it all."
As they continue to walk down the numerous blocks, Elliot touches her arm or her shoulder every time he finds something that is interesting or amusing to him. "Would you like to sit down for awhile and grab a snack?"
"A break sounds like a great idea.  I don't recall the last time I've walked so much in one day" explains Annie feeling the intense ache between her toes and right heal.
As Annie finds a booth for them to sit in, she observes Elliot as he heads to the counter to order a serving of sweet baklava. A short brunette stands in line behind him and they strike up a quick conversation.  He is quite animated and cheerful while talking to the young woman who laughs with each phrase and shows him the bag of items that she has been shopping for that day.  The conversation ends when Elliot orders his food.  Elliot flashes a rather large smile at Annie as he carries the tray of hot chocolate and dessert towards her.  Annie smiles back but contemplates his skill level to charm everyone around him.
"So, what are you doing tomorrow?" asks Elliot relaxing in the booth and propping  his feet up the bench across from him on her side.
Taking a big sip leaving a trace of whip cream on her upper lip, Annie explains  "I don't know.  I have to check with my family first.  My friend from college lives on the outskirts of the city.  She had a car accident a few years ago and is in a wheelchair.  She doesn't travel much so it would be really nice to see her soon."
"Oh,  maybe if we talk Beth and Ariel Gray into joining us, they'll let you free for the day" sarcastically jokes Elliot knowing that his comment is closer to the truth than not.
"Yes, that might work" agrees Annie wondering if they will have enough time to meet up with Beth and Ariel tonight while peering down at her watch "I think we should go, they're probably already waiting for us".
"What if we told them that we made other plans?" suggests Elliot nudging her thigh playfully with his foot "What do you think?"
"I think that Beth's wrath would be more than I could tolerate right now" sighs Annie enjoying her day alone with Elliot but feeling slightly uneasy but sure that there will be more days to come.
"I suppose if you think so, but we need to make another plan for just the two of us for another day, if that's all right with you" suggests Elliot flirting back with a sparkle in his eye getting up to leave but waiting until Annie catches up with him before walking out the door.
They continue to walk down the street passing family owned bookshops, jewelry stores, local deli's  whose aroma carries throughout the neighborhood, trendy clothing stores, and other shops of various interests.  The city is loud but the residents are friendly and polite as long as you keep walking on one side and not too far side by side.  Elliot moves slightly behind her but very near still so they can continue to chat with each other.
In the chill of the air, Elliot interlocks Annie's arm with his own when they reach a clearer and open space to walk together.   Annie smiles at him but a little ill at ease unfamiliar with so much attention.   He laughs and jokes with her.
As they arrive at the shop to meet up with Ariel and Beth, Annie looks into her purse for a breath mint.  She pulls out a braided bracelet that Karina made for her at the children's home.  Her thoughts flow back to memories of Rick and her heart aches wondering if across the world Lauren is captivating his attention tonight.  A sense of sadness fills her thoughts as Annie places the homemade bracelet on her wrist sighing as she gently brushes it with her other hand.
"We're all here now!" announces Elliot walking first through the automatic glass door with the other two young women trailing along behind him.  "Are you ready?"
"Yes, I think so" replies Annie giving one last glance up at the moon in the night sky and then picking up a couple of small bags of items she purchased earlier in the day that were resting on the ground next to her.
"This way ladies!" points Elliot with a charming teasing look resting on each of them for a moment before moving next to Annie and taking her bags to carry without her asking.
Noticing Elliot's attention drawing to an opposing favorite, Beth squints her eyes at his calculated move, "Well, if you want to be a servant today, you can carry my bags too!" handing him four more rather large bags of her own and giving him a feather kiss on the cheek "It's always nice to have a real man around ..."

The Covenant - Chapter Twenty-One

"Ahhh... Lydia Russell so good to see you again" exclaims Walter Elliot reaching out with one hand but as he poses in front of the hall mirror to check himself once again for the day  and then glancing over towards his daughter "My Annie, it seems that you have a tan! Peru actually tanned your skin rather than burn like it usually does."

"I got burned, but then the tan came" explains Annie giving her father a hug and then heading towards her younger sister, Beth, to give her one as well.

"Be careful with my hair.  Ariel just finished putting it together.  I don't want you to mess it up!" warns Beth politely tapping her sister's back in her rather distant embrace.

"It's good to see you Beth!  Hope you had a good summer!" greets Annie bracing herself for the response.

"I suppose if you call leaving your home and all your friends a 'good thing'.  Although I was glad to have my best friend, Ariel, with me.  We've had some good times together these last few weeks" explains Beth looking over at her friend as if sharing a few secrets unknown to the others "It hasn't been as bad as I expected it would be."

"It's been great!" giggles Ariel Clay as if she has been involved in some mischief of her own looking over at Walter Elliot "This is a fantastic city!  I would love to live here all the time!  But of course, you would need plenty of money to do that.  Your father has been very generous and we've been able to see quite  a few shows as well as visit some of the top restaurants in town. Your dad spared no expense to make sure we had a fabulous time here so far!"

The color drains from Annie's face fully aware of her father's rather limited budget to stay here for so long a period of time. Cautiously she acknowledges their experience "Sounds interesting.  You'll have to fill me in on the details."

"I'm sure Annie would like to tell you about her summer too!" intercedes Lydia Russell feeling the tension starting to rise in her friend "Tell, them all about it Annie. I'm sure they are dying to hear all of your wonderful adventures."

"Well, I worked at a children's home" begins Annie watching her family's feigned interest begins to dissolve "I loved working with the kids.  Major Smith was a wonderful mentor and it was so good to see Harriet Smith again too!"

"Oh yes.  Harriet is Emma's friend" remembers Beth wiping imaginary lint off of her skirt "I think she liked a cowboy or something like that"

"That's good. I'm glad you had a summer that was meaningful to you" dismisses Walter Elliott already a little bored with the conversation that does not center around himself "You'll have to tell us more later when we have more time."

"Okay" agrees Annie not really all that enthused to share how special each person was that she met with those who will not appreciate the love she had for them "I'm sure there will be another time."

"Annie, I forgot to tell you.  We met this gorgeous guy that Beth and I have been going to a few plays with.  I'm sure you'll be quite jealous when you meet him.  I think he positively adores me!" conceitedly gushes Beth raising her voice in a condescending tone "He can hardly keep his eyes off me! Don't you agree, Ariel?"

Ariel looks down and then towards the window not meeting Beth's gaze afraid that the truth will be too obvious. Believing in her opinion that the admiration appeared to be more one-sided and not from him half-heartedly agrees "Yes, you seem to like spending  quite a lot of time with him."

"He's coming to see me this afternoon" firmly states Beth with special emphasis on 'ME' while looking towards the clock "He'll be here any minute now."

Just at that moment, there is a knock at the door.

"Annie, get that would you? I've got to freshen up" explains Beth heading towards her bedroom "Come on Ariel, you can help me."

Opening the door, Annie stares straight into the eyes of the stranger whom she met in Peru. "Hi!" he stutters "I don't know if you remember me.  We met in Peru earlier this summer. What are you doing here?"

Overwhelmed by some shock of her own "I'm staying with my family.  I just got into town a few hours ago."

"It's really great to see you again! I'm sorry that I didn't catch your name before, but I haven't forgotten meeting you" gushes Elliot "I guess it's time we finally introduced ourselves. My name is Elliott Wilkinson. Now, what is your name?"

"I'm Anne Elliott, but my friends call me 'Annie'.  Your first name is the same as my last" amused by the coincidence Annie smiles back at him "It's good to finally meet you! Thanks so much again for the water!"

"I was here to see Beth and Ariel because they invited me to a matinee this afternoon at the theatre on 47th.  Would you like to go with us?' asks Elliot  but seeing her slight reluctance to immediately agree counters "If not, we can do something else.  We could catch up by telling our own stories of Peru".

"What are your plans for this afternoon?" asks Elliot hoping that she might have some free time to spend with him even if it is without her more ambitious sister and friend.

"I was hoping to take a walk down Broadway to see the different shops and sights, but not exactly going to any place in particular" explains Annie "I didn't realize that Beth and Ariel had already made plans with you."

"A walk sounds like a great idea!" offers Eliot believing that if Beth were present she might monopolize anytime available to get to know Annie better  "I'm sure Beth and Ariel will be able to find their own way to the theatre on the subway. I don't think they'll mind.  They've been down to Times Square many times already."

"What's this?  Do you know Annie?" accusingly asks Beth not liking how much attraction there seems to be between her potential boyfriend and her sister "How do you know her? Annie, where did you meet Eliot?  You can't possibly be already making a move on him.  He just walked in the door!"

"I met Annie in Peru up at Machu Picchu.  She was thirsty and I offered her a bottle of water" explains Elliot a little surprised by the possessive tone in Beth's voice. "We're catching up from our summer together."

"Not quite together" interjects Annie for fear of her sister's wrath at not having met him first "We saw each other a couple of times the last few days I was there."

Beth's eyes glare at her older sister "Umm... that's interesting. You never mentioned anything about it. Was this some sort of surprise for me?"

"No, no ... it was by chance we ran into each other.  It's great seeing Annie again.  I'm going to be spending the afternoon with her.  I'm going to show her some of my favorite spots in the city.  You've already been here awhile and don't need to repeat the same places.  Go ahead and enjoy the show. I'll catch up with you later tonight" firmly suggests Eliot with a charming smile winning Beth over in spite of her flare of jealousy.

"I'll be looking forward to seeing you tonight.  Don't think about how much you're missing me too much!" flirts Beth winking her eye at him with a little flip of her hair and then looking directly at her sister to make sure that she knows her 'property' has been claimed and then back over to Elliot with a sweet smile  "You have my number.  I'm sure you must have it on speed dial by now."

"Okay, I'll call when we're done taking my personal guided tour of the city" replies Eliot moving closer to Annie and places his hand on the middle of her back "Are you ready? I've got a few places in mind that I think you'll like".

"I'll be ready to go in a minute.  Just let me grab my jacket and phone" replies Annie quickly picking up her things on the sofa not wanting to be left alone with her sister to hear her disgust and anger over how the arrangements turned out for the afternoon "I think I've got everything."

"Promise you'll meet us later" demands Beth childishly with a fake pout "I don't know how we'll make it without you."

"I'm sure you'll do fine for the afternoon" assures Elliot escorting Annie out the door while he follows closing behind "Have a good time!"

As the door closes, Beth can be heard inside "How do you like that? Annie actually managed to pick up a guy while she was down in Peru.  Who would have thought? I certainly never would have believed it!"

The Covenant - Chapter Twenty

"I think that is all of it" sighs Annie reaching for the last bag the yellow taxi driver hands to her while leaves a good tip for the friendly driver who thoughtfully pointed out a few stops to see as well as some concise history of the city of New York on their way from the airport "Hope you have a great day!"
"Thank you ma'am.  Best to you and yours!" he nods his head with a smile and then while getting back into his car contented to find some rather surprisingly pleasant and talkative passengers to share part of his day  "Be careful and have a good time!"
"Come on, Annie.  I believe the entrance to The Camden Residence where your family is staying is just around the corner" states Lydia Russell fixing her hair and adjusting her skirt before taking a few steps forward down the sloped sidewalk on the upper west side "Mostly seniors live at the residence, but your dad was able to make arrangements to stay for a few months with his cousin who is the manager."
"That was extremely thoughtful considering our situation.  It's in a lovely location in the city with access to everything" observes Annie quite pleased and wondering what the next weeks will hold "We'll definitely have to go out for a walk later to investigate the city."
"Oh, I don't know about going out at night.  Maybe Beth or Ariel Clay will go with you instead.  I'm sure there are plenty of things to do and see" suggests Lydia Russell "I can keep your dad company while you are away and having fun.  I'm sure he'll want to hear about everything that has happened in Kellynich while he's been gone."
"Well, it's you're loss ... I think you would really enjoy a walking tour" chides Annie taking in a deep breath of air to consume the various scents surrounding her that comprise a large urban city. "I love the smell of the restaurants and bakeries!"
"I don't know what you are talking about. I smell day old garbage and exhaust" sniffs Lydia Russell whipping her eyes looking up at the rather musty sky "So much noise too!"
"I think it's great!  Everything is alive and breathing here ... so many people, each with their own stories of challenges and accomplishments" dreams Annie lost her thoughts and shifting her scarf to keep her a bit warmer in the fall breeze "Wasn't the park beautiful as we drove in?"
"Yes, I suppose so with the changing leaves.  It was rather scenic in the middle of a city" agrees Lydia Russell checking for any scuffs on her designer boots which she purchased yesterday "Maybe we can go for a walk tomorrow through Central Park."
"That's a deal!" cheerfully agrees Annie double checking the instructions she wrote down on the piece of paper from her pocket "We're suppose to ask for Major Zwalsky who has keys for us."
The women walk through the open doors to find a friendly security guard keeping watch over the entrance.  After explaining who they are, the security guard gives them directions on where to find Major Zwalsky in the chapel for the residents.
The lobby is decorated in fall colors with phrases of friendship on the pillows and a warm homey atmosphere.  The picture frames on the walls display gardens from all over the world. It is a peaceful and inviting place.  The residents are scattered throughout the lobby.  Some men playing a game of chess in the corner with a couple of best friends sharing photos on the loveseat.  A group of four is playing a rather competitive game of canasta near the dining room entrance.  An older gentleman has fallen asleep in the oversized recliner snoring rather loudly with a open history book resting on his chest while one leg hangs down from the foot rest.  Another friend is explaining the most recent beauty tips that she found in her Best Housekeeping Secrets magazine to the preoccupied woman waiting anxiously for her granddaughters to arrive for a visit.  Soft music echoes through the lobby as they listen to someone playing the piano in the chapel providing a beautiful ambiance among the treasure of friends.

"Shall we go this way?" asks Lydia Russell leading them towards the lovely arrangement of a well-known hymn from the songbook.

"You're playing one of my favorites" warmly states Annie after he has finished his arrangement of the piece "Fewster is probably at the top of the list of all time favorite tunes".
"It's one of my favorites too!" he broadly smiles "Where are you from? My name is Alfred. What's your's?"
"My name is Annie, and this is my good friend, Lydia Russell" explains Annie with a polite nod from Lydia who is admiring some of the intricate stain glass in the chapel "We're going to be staying here for a little while with my dad and sister."
"Oh really?  You'll have to come down and sit with me for awhile. I'll play for you. I use to take requests at a piano bar when I was younger, I know quite a few of the standards but those recent songs on the radio just don't have much melody, you sort of have to make it up as you go along to give it any flavor" smiles Alfred wrinkling his nose with a chuckle "Do you like Broadway tunes? Or, Frank Sinatra?  I suppose you probably know Michael Buble songs which are practically the same thing."
"Yes, I listen to both and I like Broadway songs too!  It would be fun to spend an afternoon with you!" delighted Annie smiles back at him  "It might be kind-of fun to sing along with live music too!"
"Great idea!" agrees Alfred "It's a date!  Just let me know when and I'll meet you here.  I've got to go check on my Isabel.  She wasn't feeling so well this morning.  I'll talk to you later."
"Is Isabel your wife?  I hope she feels better soon!" sincerely offers Annie.
"He,he,he ... she thinks so.  She's bossy enough.  No, Isabel is my shihtzu.  She's fourteen years old and such a sweetie" states Alfred taking a photo out of his pocket "Florence went to be with Jesus about seven years ago.  Here's a picture of her, such a beauty both inside and out,  I miss her every day."
"She's lovely" agrees Annie feeling sorry that he would have lost someone so dear to him "You look very happy together in this photo."
"Yeah, we do" smiles Alfred lost in sweet memories of the past "Wait for the right one.  She was my second chance and made life rather wonderful for both of us.  I'll always love her."
"I'll remember that" states Annie looking him directly in the eyes and finding a small tear there "Thank you for sharing her photo with me."
"Next time we meet, I'll play some of her favorites for you" suggests Alfred heading towards the elevator while leaning on his cane. "It was good to meet  you Annie! Who did you say your family was again?"
"I didn't yet.  My dad is Walter Elliot and my sister's name is Beth" explains Annie while grasping her purse a little tighter feeling that the mention of those names suddenly made the room more tense.
"Ahh ... yes" listens Alfred bunching up his lips and looking towards the ground not sure how to blend the impression of her family versus this lovely lady he just met "Well,  I'll see you later"
"Bye!  Looking forward to hearing you play again!" yells back Annie as the elevator doors close feeling as if she just made her first friend in New York.
"I think Major Zwalsky just arrived" notices Lydia Russell walking to meet the administrator and stretching out her hand to greet her "My name is Lydia Russell and we have made arrangements to stay here with the Elliott family."
"Oh yes.  Commissioner Darylmple made me aware of your visit.  I've prepared a guest room for both of you.  The other members of your family are staying on the guest rooms two floors above you" curtly explains Major Zwalsky.
However a few minutes later having  met with an abundance of enthusiastic compliments from Annie about how impressed she is with the residence,  Major Zwalsky kindly returns "Thank you so much!  We do our best to make everyone comfortable here.  If there is anything you need, please let me know and I'll try to find a solution for you.  Enjoy your stay!"
"I already love it here!" exclaims Annie in the elevator excitedly looking forward to the new adventures that lay ahead of her.
"Mmmm that's interesting.  We've only been here twenty minutes" snidely remarks Lydia Russell taking off her scarf and coat before the doors open "It's so hot in this building.  I wonder if they always keep it this warm?"
"Probably, it helps the residents from catching cold or feeling uncomfortable" thoughtfully answers Annie "I get cold all the time and my circulation issues haven't been around for as long as some of the others here.  I can't imagine what I'll be like when I'm older .  I'll probably have to wear three coats inside to keep warm in the winter!"
"Let's see.  Major Zwalsky said your dad was in room 1463 which looks like it is just down the hallway" instructs Lydia Russell grabbing her handbag having left the rest of her luggage behind the check-in desk down in the lobby for someone else to take to where she is staying at a later time.
"Okay" states Annie picking up a bag and throwing it over her shoulder along with her purse and then on the other shoulder a book bag  and a smaller bag of tourist items she bought at the airport while she drags her large suitcase down the hallway.
As Annie passes an adjoining hallway, she sees the back of a figure headed in the opposite direction who seems vaguely familiar but can't place where she might know him from at the moment. "I'll have to think about that" she tells herself "I think that I should know him.  Maybe I'll remember who it is later."
